My ISA Journey: From Shrimp Boil Guest to Section Leader

My ISA Story: From Shrimp Boil to Section President

Unexpected Beginnings

My journey with the International Society of Automation began unexpectedly in 2022 at the Wilmington Section’s annual Shrimp Boil. Initially attending as an ACE representative rather than an ISA member, I focused on networking and enjoying the food. However, conversations with section leaders that evening, including former ACE engineer Shawn Coughlan, sparked my interest in the organization’s potential.

Rapid Leadership Progression

Shortly after the event, my name was recommended for the section’s executive board. I quickly transitioned into the Membership Chair position, dedicating the next two years to welcoming new members and maintaining community engagement. This role provided my first substantial exposure to ISA’s organizational structure and mission.

This experience revealed ISA’s national scope through technical sessions, career development workshops, and networking opportunities. The conference energized my approach to section leadership and even enabled me to reconnect with an engineer from my first industry project.

Expanding Responsibilities

In 2024, I advanced to Program Chair, coordinating meeting planning, technical presentations, and event organization. This position included managing the very Shrimp Boil that initiated my ISA involvement. The event represents more than food—it serves as our community’s primary annual gathering for connection and knowledge sharing across different industry segments.

Stepping Up to Presidency

When the section president relocated earlier this year, I accepted the Secretary/President-Elect position. Despite initial hesitation about assuming presidential responsibilities, I recognized the importance of maintaining section continuity. By summer 2026, I will officially become section president, continuing our established momentum and expanding our community impact.

Building Inclusive Leadership

Our section’s current leadership composition represents meaningful progress for the automation field. The board comprises young, energized professionals, including three women in key positions—an uncommon representation in our industry. We’re actively strengthening ties with University of Delaware students, resulting in our first student member and increased student participation at section events.

Personal and Professional Value

ISA uniquely bridges my professional automation work and community engagement interests. The organization develops the standards I implement daily while providing opportunities for personal growth and contribution. This dual benefit creates lasting value beyond technical knowledge alone.
